Family Matters Video Series Online Discussion Group 2022

Chronic Anxiety

Online Discussion
Nov 9, 2022 (Wed) 7:00 -8:30 pm

In this video, Host Allen Blakey interviews Dr. Michael Kerr, Director of the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family at that time. What turns the stress response, with its adaptive survival value, into a chronic condition that is detrimental to health and relationships? In Bowen theory it’s all linked to relationships and the relationship system. The concept of the self is fundamental to Bowen theory.

People with higher levels of self have an increased ability to use their objective thinking to choose how to act within the family emotional unit. When tension increases, it becomes more difficult to act based on thinking. When someone in the family can operate with a little more self, chronic anxiety can decrease.
