About Family Matters
Family Matters is a series of half hour TV shows jointly produced by the Bowen Center for the University of the District of Columbia since 2006. The format is a one-on-one interview designed to bring out the best and most in-depth observations from professional people with experience in Bowen family systems theory who have spent their professional lives learning about the issues that matter to families.
The purpose of the program is to support the mission of the Bowen Center to assist families in solving major life problems through understanding and improving human relationships and to support the adult programming strategy of UDC-TV. Bowen Theory and Sexual Intimacy

In this video, host Dr. Mariana Martinez interviews Margaret Donley, faculty of the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family.

  • What does sex do to the brain? How is the biology of sex manifested in the marital relationship and in the family?
  • There are ways in which sex regulates marital relationships. Sex is involved in the reward system of the brain and the human pattern of pair bonding.
  • Females and males have different chemical responses to sex leading to differing patterns of sexual behavior.
  • Margaret makes the claim that “maternal behavior cancels sexual behavior.” Understanding the biological differences can be calming to both men and women.
