Chronic Illness and Death of Family Members

When chronic illness or death quietly enters a family, its impact extends far beyond the individual member—it affects the balance and functioning of the entire family system. The interactions among family members, emotional distance, role distribution, and even intergenerational beliefs may all undergo profound, subtle changes.

Centered on the concept of “family resilience,” this lecture will adopt the perspective of Bowen Family Systems Theory to explore how families understand stress and adaptation from a systemic viewpoint when facing long-term illness or the loss of a loved one. We will focus on how families can respond to challenges and achieve growth by enhancing self-differentiation, alleviating the transmission of anxiety, and rebuilding emotional connections.

This lecture welcomes family therapists, social workers, counselors, healthcare professionals, and members of the public interested in family dynamics. Whether you are a family member navigating these issues or a practitioner hoping to deepen your understanding of family systems, you are invited to join this in-depth dialogue and sharing on love, loss, and resilience.

Let us explore together: In the midst of vulnerability, how can families still possess resilience and hope?
